The Tropicana Las Vegas closed its doors and bid farewell after its final day open on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024. Like many locals and curious tourists, I was there on its final day to pay my respects to a Las Vegas legend and the third oldest hotel on The Strip.

Is Tropicana Las Vegas being torn down?

Once enriched with a South Beach motif, the Tropicana stood as a testament to Las Vegas history, embracing its glamorous and old-Vegas mob notorious sides. Its closing signals the last remnants of an end to an era when casinos were dominated by organized crime associations.

A major league ballpark and a shopping district will replace the closing hotel. For Vegas longtimers like myself, it’s sad to see such an iconic hotel on The Strip close. Yet, it’s also exciting to see the future of the city being unveiled.

What will replace the Tropicana Las Vegas?

A historic end to a casino almost 70 years old and once hailed as “The Tiffany of The Strip” featured in The Godfather and other feature films. Las Vegas is not just letting go of a relic but is keenly redefining its identity far beyond the Nevada entertainment of old.

What will replace the Tropicana Las Vegas?

With the revered Tropicana making way, a new beacon of entertainment rises on the Las Vegas Strip. A majestic baseball stadium for Major League Baseball’s Athletics (the A’s – currently the Oakland Athletics) is set to replace the iconic establishment, heralding a seismic shift towards a vibrant sports and entertainment district.

Is Tropicana Las Vegas being torn down?

If you are planning to visit Las Vegas, you still have plenty of time to take pictures and appreciate the legacy of Tropicana on the Vegas Strip. Despite the property being closed in April, its demolition won’t take place until October. *The Tropicana Las Vegas was demolished on October 9th, 2024.

The Tropicana Hotel’s heritage lives on through its namesake road, Tropicana Avenue, which intersects with Las Vegas Boulevard on the Las Vegas Strip and runs through the Vegas Valley.
